50 FACTS ABOUT SHEOL

1.      The word “Sheol” is a Hebrew word.

2.      “Sheol” appears 66 times in the Bible (and all 66 passages are cited in this article).

3.      In our English translations, sometimes “Sheol” is left untranslated, and sometimes it is translated into English words.

4.      “Sheol” was translated “grave” 55 times in the New International Version, and “depths of the grave” twice.

5.      Likewise, “Sheol” was translated “the grave” 31 times in the King James Version.

6.      “Sheol” must mean “the grave” in Psalm 49:14, where bodies rot in Sheol.

7.      And in Psalm 141:7, which speaks of bones “scattered at the mouth of Sheol” (ESV).

8.      And in Ecclesiastes 9:10, which says, “there is no work or thought or knowledge or wisdom in Sheol” (ESV).

9.      And in Job 17:13-16, where Job spoke of Sheol as a place of worms and dust.

10.  But sometimes “Sheol” refers to where the soul goes at death, as in Psalm 86:13: “you have delivered my soul from the depths of Sheol” (ESV).

11.  Strong’s Dictionary rightly defines “Sheol” as “Hades.”

12.  This is seen by comparing Psalm 16:10 [“You will not leave my soul in Sheol” (NKJV)], to its quotation in Acts 2:27 [“You will not leave my soul in Hades” (NKJV)].

13.  Bridgway Bible Dictionary also notes that Bible “writers often used ‘sheol’ simply as another word for death.”

14.  This is seen by comparing Hosea 13:14 [“O Sheol, where is your sting” (NASB)], to its quotation in 1 Cor. 15:55 [“O death, where is your sting” (NASB)].

15.  Sheol scares people (Psalm 116:3).

16.  Sheol doesn’t worship God (Ps 6:5; Is. 38:18).

17.  Sheol is deep (Job 11:8; Is. 7:11).

18.  God’s anger is like a fire that “burns to the depths of Sheol” (Deut. 32:22 ESV).

19.  “Jealousy is as severe as Sheol” (Song 8:6 NASB).

20.  God sees Sheol (Job 26:6; Proverbs 15:11; Amos 9:2).

21.  In fact, God is in Sheol (Psalm 139:8).

22.  God brings people down to Sheol (1 Samuel 2:6).

23.  Sad Job begged God to hide him in Sheol (Job 14:13).

24.  David sometimes prayed that wicked people would go to Sheol (Psalm 31:17; 55:15).

25.  The wicked do go to Sheol (Job 21:13; 24:19; Ps 9:17).

26.  But so do the righteous (Psalm 16:10; cf. Ez 32:21, 27).

27.  The foolish “are appointed for Sheol” (Psalm 49:14 ESV).

28.  Wisdom keeps one from Sheol (Proverbs 15:24).

29.  Disciplining kids saves their souls from Sheol (Pr 23:14).

30.  But foolishness leads to Sheol (Proverbs 9:18).

31.  An immoral woman leads you to Sheol too (Pr 5:5; 7:27).

32.  Some sought “advice from” those in Sheol (Is 57:9 CEV).

33.  Those in Sheol won’t return to earthly homes (Job 7:9-10).

34.  When Jacob thought Joseph was dead, he said, “I shall go down to Sheol to my son” (Gen 37:35 ESV).

35.  Later, Jacob told his sons that if harm should befall Benjamin, “you would bring down my gray hairs with sorrow to Sheol” (Genesis 42:38 ESV; 44:29, 31).

36.  David told Solomon not to let Joab’s “gray head go down to Sheol in peace” (1 Kings 2:6 ESV).

37.  Likewise, David told Solomon to bring Shimei’s “gray head down with blood to Sheol” (1 Kings 2:9 ESV).

38.  David & Jonah spoke of near-death events as if they’d been in Sheol (2 Sm 22:6; Ps 18:5; 30:3; Jon 2:2).

39.  Heman said his life drew near to Sheol (Psalm 88:3).

40.  Hezekiah wrote, “In the middle of my life I am to enter the gates of Sheol” (Isaiah 38:10 ESV).

41.  Ethan asked, “Who can deliver his soul from the power of Sheol?” (Psalm 89:48 ESV).

42.  Judah thought they were safe, as if they had an agreement with “Sheol” (Is. 28:15).

43.  But such an agreement would not stand (Isaiah 28:18).

44.  Korah and others “went down alive into Sheol, and the earth closed over them” (Num 16:30-33 ESV).

45.  This king of Babylon and his pomp were brought down to Sheol (Isaiah 14:11, 15).

46.  And Sheol was excited to meet him (Is. 14:9).

47.  When Assyria and its allies went down to “Sheol,” God caused lamentations (Ezekiel 31:15-17 NASB).

48.  Sheol swallows people alive (Proverbs 1:12).

49.  Sheol is never satisfied (Proverbs 27:20; 30:16; Isaiah 5:14; Habakkuk 2:5)—it always wants more dead people!

But one psalmist may have thought about a great day coming when he would be resurrected, when saying: “God will ransom my soul from the power of Sheol, for he will receive me” (Psalm 49:15 ESV).
