Exercising the Mind
I would like to thank and commend those who have helped to design, institute and carry out the K.I.C.K. program. (K.I.C.K is an acronym for Kids in Christ’s Kingdom.)
I think it is a wonderful program and I’m very glad that Delevan and Kayla are now a part of it.
As Delevan and Kayla prepared for this past week’s K.I.C.K. gathering, they were focusing on some memory work – the Ten Commandments to be more precise. If they could recite them, they would be able to pin a badge to their banners hanging in the fellowship room. For all the members of the congregation, please notice the banners hanging on the East wall in the fellowship room. Each K.I.C.K. participant has a banner and the badges attached to them represent individual accomplishments. Please be sure to encourage the kids and congratulate them for their hard work.
Within the K.I.C.K. program, there are a variety of memorization goals for the different age ranges. Here is a sampling: the 7 Days of Creation, the Books of the Bible, the names of the Judges, the names of the Apostles, the 12 Sons of Jacob, the 10 Plagues, the Model Prayer, the Miracles of Jesus, the Beatitudes, the Fruit of the Spirit, the Parables of Jesus, the Christian Virtues, the Christian Armor, the Plan of Salvation, the Great Commission, the 19 Heroes of Faith from Hebrews 11, the Five Acts of Worship and a whole variety of specific Bible verses and more. Again, I think it is a wonderful program. It is a fantastic way for the kids – in an organized manner – to be challenged to grow in their knowledge of God’s word. And, to be truthful with you, it is something that Amy and I are looking forward to doing with the kids. It will refresh our minds regarding things we memorized years ago and will be an encouragement to memorize more. We’re genuinely looking forward to it.
As I considered the memorization efforts of the K.I.C.K. program I thought to myself, “It’s a shame that our memorization efforts seem to fade with age.” I can use myself as an example. As a youngster in Bible classes, I was greatly encouraged to memorize specific verses. It motivated me and I genuinely enjoyed putting forth the effort. I appreciated the sense of accomplishment and hungered for more. Unfortunately (and yes, I’ll admit it) that began to fade over time. So, even though the efforts of K.I.C.K. are aimed primarily at our youth, we can all benefit from similar efforts.
So, with all these things having been said, I’m going to begin a new feature in our bulletin called “Exercising the Mind.” The purpose of this feature is to promote Bible study and memorization efforts and motivate members of the church to participate in the efforts. No, there will be no banners or badges. But, we can have re-instilled within us the encouragement of putting forth an effort in memorizing aspects of Gods’ word and the sense of accomplishment in being successful with those efforts. So, look for the “Exercising the Mind” feature and please be a participant with it. And, as always, Happy Studying…
Exercising the Mind for this week: the 66 Books of the Bible
“But strong meat belongeth to them that are of full age, even those who by reason of use have their senses exercised to discern both good and evil.” (Hebrews 5:12, KJV)
