GET
A GOOD NIGHT’S SLEEP Did you know that there is a “National Sleep
Foundation”? They maintain that eight
to nine hours of sleep for adult humans is optimal and that sufficient sleep
benefits alertness, memory, and problem solving, overall health, as well as
reducing the risk of accidents. Here are
some tips on getting a good night’s sleep: Work
hard The Bible says, “The sleep of a labouring man is sweet”
(Ecclesiastes 5:12). It makes sense
that if you work hard, you’ll be good and tired when bedtime comes around. Besides, the New Testament commands us to,
“work with your hands, as we instructed you, so that you may live properly
before outsiders and be dependent on no one” (1 Thes. 4:11-12 ESV). Young women are told to be “working at home”
(Titus 2:5 ESV). “Whatever you do, work
heartily, as for the Lord and not for men” (Col. 3:23 ESV)—and this ought to
help you get a good night’s sleep. Trust
God Maybe you have trouble sleeping at night because you’re
worried about things—finances, health problems, the future, etc. But remember that the Bible says, “do not be
anxious about anything, but in everything by prayer and supplication with
thanksgiving let your requests be made known to God. And the peace of God, which surpasses all
understanding, will guard your hearts and your minds in Christ Jesus” (Philip.
4:6-7 ESV). Then you can say with David,
“In peace I will both lie down and sleep; for you alone, O Lord, make me dwell
in safety” (Psalm 4:8 ESV). Have
a good conscience I’ve heard that a hotel advertised, “If you can’t sleep
here, it must be your conscience.”
Baptism gives you a good conscience—Peter wrote, “Baptism, which
corresponds to this, now saves you, not as a removal of dirt from the body but
as an appeal to God for a good conscience, through the resurrection of Jesus
Christ” (1 Peter 3:21 ESV). If you’ve
been baptized but have since lost your good conscience, try repentance and
prayer (Acts 8:22) and see if you don’t have a good night’s sleep! |
