JEREMIAH

Our brother Wayne Jackson wrote:

“There are many things about heaven that I do not understand.  I therefore hope that I am not speaking irreverently when I suggest that in our final abode, it would be a supreme thrill to embrace Jeremiah and heartily thank him for the encouragement he has lent to my life.”

Our brother Robert Harkrider wrote:

“All disappointed, unappreciated, misunderstood, misrepresented, and persecuted workers for Christ should turn aside again and again to consider the life and work of Jeremiah.  It may seem unthinkable that such a great prophet as Jeremiah would ever become so discouraged that he would contemplate not speaking God’s word.  Yet when one reads the book and sees the attitudes he faced for 40 years, it then becomes a marvel that he was able to persevere!  Many a preacher of today has quit for less cause.  Many a soldier in the Lord’s army has ceased fighting with fewer reasons for discouragement.  One of the great values of this book is to help us realize that our times are not unique.  The dark clouds of materialism, false religious, and ungodliness which have caused so many to become indifferent and unconcerned about God’s word were the same sort of problems Jeremiah faced.”

Our brother Homer Hailey wrote:

“Let the student of this book look beyond Jeremiah’s work and times and see the man himself and his God, for he will become an inspiration and a source of encouragement in the trying period of one’s own life.  God needs such men today: men who will stand in the midst of all obstacles.  Become such a one.”

Our brother Roy Deaver wrote:

“May God help us always to have the concern, the compassion, the courage of Jeremiah.  May God help us to be faithful—as was Jeremiah—in the discharge of our duties.  May God help us and bless us that we may truly have the heart of Jeremiah the Prophet, faithful servant of God.”

Our brother Jerry Fite wrote:

“The world, just a heartbeat away from eternal destruction, does not need a preacher who offers false peace and tolerates sin. Sinners need the preacher who condemns sin with sound reasoning, sets before all the good way of the Lord and warns of imminent judgment with tears. If God were to come in judgment tomorrow, the world would need preaching like Jeremiah's today.”

Our brother James Burton Coffman wrote:

“Jeremiah certainly opened his [mouth]; and his complaints, protestations, remonstrances [that is, objections], and vehement denunciations of the sins and sinners of his day rise like a mighty chorus throughout his writings. […] it is one of the most interesting books ever written; and the study of it reveals many glorious helpful teachings.”

Our brother Robert R. Taylor Jr. wrote:

“Perhaps the greatest tribute ever given Jeremiah is when some looked at Jesus and said he was Jeremiah (Matthew 16:13ff).  They were wrong in their assessment but what an exalted tribute to the maligned prophet in his own era.  Judgment scales will even up the matter and fullness of reward will be his in the heavenly hereafter.”

And my old teacher, our brother James Meadows, quotes someone named Raymond Calkins as saying:

“There is no nobler, more militant or morally more splendid character to be found in the whole range of Scripture.  Moses and Paul of Tarsus are the only men who can stand beside him.”

Would you like to learn more about Jeremiah?  Beginning this Tuesday, February 23rd, the Tuesday morning class will be studying the book of Jeremiah.  This class will be a summary of Jeremiah, and we will be filling out a workbook (provided to each student free of charge) written by our brother Roger Hillis.  Everyone, both men and women, are welcome to attend.  The class meets for one hour, every Tuesday, at 10 a.m.
