Luke 6:17-19 - Four Important Points
<Return to Sermon Outlines>
-Introduction
-general comments regarding bulletin article – i.e. progressions in Galilean Ministry
-Jesus’revelation of his power and authority; development of the twelve; Jewish opposition
-Word regarding Jesus was spreading rapidly. Multitudes were gathering to him and the people
were continually amazed by his power and teachings.
-This morning, we’ll focus on Luke 6:17-19. Jesus had toured Galilee with his disciples, had gone to
Jerusalem and returned, he appointed the twelve and was about to deliver the Sermon on the
Mount.
-Matt. 5-7; Luke 6:20-49 – These may be parallel passages of the same event. However, they
could also be two different but similar (i.e. Luke 6:17, Matt. 5:1).
-Regardless, Jesus was about to deliver a masterpiece of a lesson.
-Yet, let’s look at these three verses which precede that lesson and see if we can take four
important points from them.
1. The People Were Excited About Jesus and Came to Him (vv 17-18)
-Here is one of those times when a great crowd gathered to Jesus.
-Matt. 4:23-25 (previously, Mark 1:21-28; Luke 4:36-37)
-This continued to be the overall pattern of the Galilean Ministry.
-Although a period of popularity, this had to be an exhausting time for Jesus.
-application of Isa 53:4 – “Isaiah’s vision is progressive; he sees, first, a man of sorrows; second, a
man sorrowful because he bore the sickness and sorrows of others; third, a man who also bore sin,
and healed the souls of others by so doing. Such was the order of Christ’s life. His early years were
spent in poverty and obscurity; his days of ministry in bearing, by sympathy and compassion, the
sicknesses and sorrows of others…and in the hour of his crucifixion, he became the world’s sin-
bearer” (McGarvey, Pendleton, The Four-Fold Gospel, 171).
-But, notice, in Luke 6:17 the multitude consists of two groups: 1. “a great crowd of his disciples” and
“a great multitude of people from all Judea and Jerusalem and the seacoast of Tyre and Sidon”
1. The followers of Jesus continued to follow Jesus. They didn’t become his followers and then
They continued to come to him. - Matt. 11:28-30
-As Christians, we MUST continue to come to Jesus. We must build and maintain a good
relationship with him.
-He’s our parakletos – (1 Jn 2:1)“called to one’s side” – Jesus will stand at our side. We must
stand by his.
-So, when we here the phrase, “Come to Jesus,” don’t just think in terms of non-Christians.
2. There is always room for more in Christ. Therefore, there is work to do.
-Whether we’re talking about his disciples or the others, there was excitement about Jesus.
-Are you excited about Christ? We ought to be.
2. The People Came to Hear Him (v 18)
-Obviously, the miracles of Jesus were gathering significant attention. And, can you imagine
if you were one of the sufferers, wouldn’t you be genuinely excited about going to where Jesus was
working!?
-Yet, notice what is listed before “to be healed of their diseases” – “to hear him.”
-John 6:66-69 – at the beginning of the next period – the Ministry of Withdrawals
-the transfiguration – Matt. 17:5
-Acts 3:22 (Deut 18:18)
-Matt. 11:28-30; 2 John 9-11, Eph 4:20 – We are saved through the truth that is in Christ and we
continue to be saved in/by his truth.
3. They Came to be Healed. We must do the Same. (v 18)
-Of course, many were seeking a physical healing. We need a spiritual one.
-Let’s always be mindful of the healing we need – Ps 41:4.
-1 Pet 2:21-24 (Isa 53:5)
-Acts 28:23-30 (Isa 6:9-10)
-We need the initial forgiveness that’s available in Christ. But, may we never forget that we need
the continued forgiveness that remains available through him. But, that continued forgiveness is
conditional upon our faithfulness – 1 John 1:7-9.
4. They Wanted to Touch Jesus. We Should be “Touched” By Him.
-One definition of “touched” has to do with having an influence on others.
-How much are we truly allowing Jesus to influence our lives?
-Are you truly excited about Jesus? Have you come to him? Are you continuing to come to him?
Are you listening to his teachings and striving to live according to them? Do you continue to
appreciate the spiritual healing that’s available through him? Are you allowing him to touch –
influence – your life?
-If not, won’t you?
