NEW CENTURY VERSION The New Century Version is the product of the World Bible Translation Center, which is affiliated with churches of Christ. The Virgin Birth Some Bibles (RSV, NRSV) call the mother of Immanuel only a “young woman” in Isaiah 7:14. This makes it confusing, then, when Matthew quotes this verse in Matthew 1:23, but says “virgin” instead. But this confusion doesn’t exist in the NCV, which says in Isaiah 7:14, “The virgin will be pregnant. She will have a son, and she will name him Immanuel.” Belief AND Obedience John 3:16, of course, shows that one must believe to be saved. In some Bibles (NASB, ESV), one can point to the end of that chapter and show that obedience is also necessary. The NCV is such a translation. It translated John 3:36: “Those who believe in the Son have eternal life, but those who do not obey the Son will never have life. God's anger stays on them." In contrast, the KJV and NKJV, unfortunately, speak only of faith in this verse. Acts 8:37 Many translations (such as the ASV, NIV, and ESV), do not include Acts 8:37 in the text. But the NCV does. It is translated, “Philip answered, ‘If you believe with all your heart, you can.’ The officer said, ‘I believe that Jesus Christ is the Son of God.’” Like the New American Standard Bible, the verse has brackets around it in order to indicate, as the NCV footnote says, “Some Greek copies do not contain the bracketed text.” Repentance The word “repent” is not found in the text of the NCV. Instead, the NCV uses phrases like, “Change your heart and life” or “Change your heart and turn away from you sin.” For example, in the NCV Acts 8:22 says, “Change your heart! Turn away from this evil thing you have done, and pray to the Lord. Maybe he will forgive you for thinking this.” Of course, if someone changed his heart and turned from his sin, wouldn’t we say he had repented? Baptism Some Bibles corrupt Acts 2:38 so that baptism doesn’t appear to be essential to salvation. Not so with the NCV. It reads: “Peter said to them, ‘Change your hearts and lives and be baptized, each one of you, in the name of Jesus Christ for the forgiveness of your sins. And you will receive the gift of the Holy Spirit.’” |
