Ch. 1:In Susa, Nehemiah is told that the wall of Jerusalem is broken down and the Jews there
are in great distress.
Ch. 2:After going to Jerusalem (with
permission from the Persian king), he inspects the walls.
Ch. 3:Assignments were
made for various part of the wall.
Ch. 4:When opponents
tried to stop the work, Nehemiah presented the matter to God, and made
arrangements to strengthen the defense of the city.
Ch. 5:He also acted
decisively to stop the rich in Jerusalem
from taking advantage of the poor, who were suffering added hardship because of
the current difficulties.
Ch. 6:Outside enemies tried
by various means to stop the work, but without success.In the end the wall was finished.
Ch. 7:A census of
returned exiles is given in this chapter.
Ch. 8:Ezra read and
explained parts of the law of Moses, first to the people and then to the leaders.After that the people celebrated the Feast of
Tabernacles.
Ch. 9:The people confess
their sins.
Ch. 10:The
people swore to God an oath of obedience, which their leaders put in writing
and signed on their behalf.
Ch. 11:A list
is given of the inhabitants of Jerusalem
and the surrounding areas.
Ch. 12:A list
of the priests and Levites is given; and the wall is dedicated.
Ch. 13: Nehemiah
made many reforms: cleansing the temple, restoring tithes, restoring the
Sabbath, and dealing with the problem of marriage to foreign women of evil
influence.
