REFLECTIONS When Don Deffenbaugh was preaching here, he used to put an article in this weekly bulletin called, “Reflections”—where he gave his thoughts on various things. This week, I’m following in Don’s respectable footsteps. Melissa and Robert First things first. It’s so great that Melissa Betchel was baptized on Sunday. All of her sins were forgiven at that time (Acts 2:38; 1 Peter 3:21). It’s also great that Robert Hardcastle recently recommitted his life to Christ, while at Green Valley Bible Camp. All of his sins were forgiven at that time (Acts 8:22; 1 John 1:9). It’s great to have young people like Melissa and Robert and many others, who exemplify Solomon’s statement, “Remember your Creator in the days of your youth” (Ecclesiastes 12:1).VBS We’ve got lots of stuff coming up. Our Vacation Bible School will be August 3rd through the 6th. The time is 9:30 to 11:30. This is for elementary school age kids, and younger. Older kids (Jr. High and High School) are encouraged to help. We still need volunteers to organize crafts and prepare and/or serve refreshments. If you can help, please sign the sheet on the bulletin board. The theme is, “Riders of the Great Roundup,” and it is a study of some of Jesus’ parables. Also, I want to meet with all volunteers Sunday at 5:15 in the library.Worship led by our young guys Hey, you don’t have to listen to me preach on Sunday night, August 16th! Quinton Anderson will be preaching that night. Quinton, along with our other young men (i.e., teenagers) are going to be leading the evening worship service on August 16th. Young men, if you and I haven’t talked yet about what you’ll be doing, let’s do so.Lectureship Our lectureship will be September 13th through the 16th. The theme is, “There’s a Great Day Coming.” Peter Persson, from Seneca, will speak on Sunday morning that week. In the class-time hour, he will speak about the resurrection, and in the worship hour he will speak about the judgment. That night, Clint Howard, from Coffeyville, will speak about the destruction of the earth. Monday night, Mike Chipman, from Fort Scott, will speak about heaven. Tuesday night, Nathan Honeycutt (who is the brother of Kayla Hayes and the son-in-law of Doug and Barbara Claxton) from Casseville, will speak about hell. And Wednesday night, Danny Boggs, from Neosho, will speak on the question, “Are You Ready?” It should be a great lectureship.Tuesday Class I’ve been asked about the Tuesday morning Bible class. It will resume on September the 8th (hopefully everyone will be done with their summer vacations by then). There’s been some discussion about moving the time from 10:30 to 10:00. If there is a time that works best for you, let me know. I haven’t yet decided what we’ll study this time, but I know it will be something from the Old Testament.Studying the Old Testament I recently read a letter on the internet in which this criticism was made against churches of Christ: “There is also a tendency to avoid Old Testament studies, or at least to down-play these as ‘unnecessary.’ Most of our members are unfamiliar with the language of the prophets, if they study them at all… We are not the ‘Bible toting, Bible quoting people’ we once used to be.” Do you think that the criticism is true or not? More specifically, is it true with regard to you? Do you read and study the Old Testament? Remember it is “inspired” and “profitable” (2 Timothy 3:16-17). Studying Revelation I was working on another article on Revelation for this week’s bulletin, but then I thought that maybe you’ve read enough of those for the time being. (It seems that sometimes I get into a series and have a hard time getting out.) However, if you would like to study Revelation some more, let me make a strong suggestion. Order Dan Winkler’s workbook on Revelation. It’s called, “The Church at Home with God: A Study of Revelation.” It only costs $5. You can order it from Winkler Publications, phone number: 1-888-986-4242. Dan’s workbook has some questions for you to answer, but mostly it is an excellent commentary on (i.e., explanation of) the mysterious symbols in the book of Revelation. |
