Respect The Elderly The Bible tells us repeatedly to
respect the elderly. Moses said to respect the elderly. He wrote, “You shall stand up before the gray
head and honor the face of an old man, and you shall fear your God: I am the
Lord” (Leviticus 19:32 ESV). Solomon said to respect the
elderly. He said, “Listen to your father
who gave you life, and do not despise your mother when she is old” (Proverbs
23:22 ESV). He also wrote, “Gray hair is
a crown of glory; it is gained in a righteous life” (Proverbs 16:31 ESV) and,
“The glory of young men is their strength, but the splendor of old men is their
gray hair” (Proverbs 20:29 ESV). Paul
said to respect the elderly. He wrote,
“Do not sharply rebuke an older man, but rather appeal to him as a father, to
the younger men as brothers, the older women as mothers, and the younger women
as sisters, in all purity” (1 Timothy 5:1-2 NASB). Peter
said to respect the elderly. He wrote,
“Young men…be submissive to those who are older” (1 Peter 5:5 NIV). Someone
has written the Beatitudes for friends of the aged: Blessed are they who understand my
faltering steps and palsied hand. Blessed are they who know that my ears
must strain to catch the words they speak. Blessed are they who looked away when
coffee spilled at the table today. Blessed are they who never say, “You’ve
told that story twice today.” Blessed are they who make it known that
I’m loved, respected, and not alone.” Blessed are those who make it possible
for me to work at tasks that are necessary. Blessed are they who stimulate my mind
and challenge me to keep growing in understanding of others. |
