THE
PROMISED OFFSPRING The very beginning of the New Testament can be very boring
reading. It is a long list of
names. On the other hand, it is
interesting to see how it relates to several promises that were made in the Old
Testament: The
offspring of Abraham The first verse in the New Testament says that Jesus is the
offspring of Abraham. God had promised
Abraham, “in your offspring shall all the nations of the earth be blessed”
(Genesis 22:18 ESV). The apostle Paul
affirmed, “Now the promises were made to Abraham and to his offspring. It does
not say, ‘And to offsprings,’ referring to many, but referring to one, ‘And to
your offspring,’ who is Christ” (Galatians 3:16 ESV). The
offspring of Isaac and Jacob The beginning of the New Testament also shows that Jesus is
the offspring of Isaac and Jacob. The
same promise that was made to Abraham was also made to Isaac and Jacob (Genesis
26:4, 28:14). Of course, then, Jesus is
the fulfillment of these promises, just as He was the fulfillment of the
promise made to Abraham. The
offspring of The beginning of the New Testament also shows that Jesus is
the offspring of The
offspring of David The first verse in the New Testament also says that Jesus
is the offspring of David. To David God
made the promise: “I will raise up your offspring after you… I will be to him a
father, and he shall be to me a son” (2 Samuel 7:12-14 ESV). This passage is quoted in Hebrews 1:5 and
applied to Jesus. Jesus is the promised
offspring! |
