God’s
name is Yahweh.God told Moses, “Say
this to the people of Israel:
Yahweh, the God of your
ancestors—the God of Abraham, the God of Isaac, and the God of Jacob—has sent
me to you. This is my eternal name, my name to remember for all generations”
(Exodus 3:15 NLT).And notice that
Moses, along with Abraham and Gideon, named some places after Yahweh.
After
Abraham showed his willingness to obey the Lord in offering up Isaac as a
sacrifice, the Lord provided a ram for sacrifice instead. Then “Abraham named the place Yahweh-Yireh
(which means ‘the Lord will provide’)” (Genesis 22:14 NLT).Likewise, Paul wrote, “And my God will supply
every need of yours according to his riches in glory in Christ Jesus”
(Philippians 4:19 ESV).
After
God gave Moses and the Israelites victory over the Amalekites, “Moses built an
altar there and named it Yahweh-nissi” (Exodus 17:15 NLT).In the Contemporary English Version,
Yahweh-nissi is translated, “The Lord Gives Me Victory.”Likewise, in the great Resurrection chapter,
Paul spoke of a victory over even death itself, saying, “But thanks be to God,
who gives us the victory through our Lord Jesus Christ” (1 Corinthians 15:57
ESV).
After
Gideon was frightened by a visit from the angel of the Lord, the Lord said to
Gideon, “Peace to you, do not fear” (Judges 6:23 NASB).“And Gideon built an altar to the Lord there and named it Yahweh-Shalom
(which means ‘the Lord is peace’)”
(Judges 6:24 NLT).Along these lines,
Paul wrote, “do not be anxious about anything, but in everything by prayer and
supplication with thanksgiving let your requests be made known to God.And the peace of God, which surpasses all
understanding, will guard your hearts and your minds in Christ Jesus”
(Philippians 4:6-7 ESV).
